History

Portrait of Octavian Geremia, painted in Venice toward the end of the period of Venetian rule in Split.
Geremia Palace in Split, Croatia
The baroque Geremia Palace, built in the mid-seventeenth century, has been in the possession of the Geremia nobility since the mid-eighteenth century. Just outside the Roman emperor Diocletian’s Palace, it is located in the medieval section of the Old Town, within the Venetians fortifications.

The most eminent member of the Geremia family was Octavian Geremia (1771‒1849), who played a significant role in Split public life at the end of the Venetian era, through the French era and the beginning of the Austrian era, becoming the mayor of Split in 1820.

In 1825, under Octavian Geremia’s patronage, the first ever international rowing regatta took place in Split, from the island of Mrdulja (between the islands of Brač and Šolta) to the Split Harbor, four years before the Boat Race between Oxford and Cambridge and twelve years before the New York (Harlem) Regatta were established.
